Widely considered to be among the top three vehicles ever made by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi, the Pajero is right up there in the list of top full-size off-roaders. The first generation came in 1981, and was also known as the Dodge Raider. Made in three- and five-door station wagon forms, this generation came with standard four-wheel drive, a choice of several gas or diesel engines (turbo and naturally aspirated), and some luxury trims, namely Exceed and Super Exceed. Known for its straight-edged style, this generation is now a firm JDM cult classic.

In 1991, the second generation was showcased, with rounder styling and Mitsubishi’s famous Super Select 4WD system. Gas and diesel engines were offered, and all the diesels used turbocharging for this generation. Once again, three and five-door variants were offered, as well as luxury trims. The second generation also gave rise to the Pajero Evolution, a three-door performance machine with a 280-horsepower MIVEC V6 doing duty under the hood.

By 1999, change was due, and Mitsubishi responded with the third generation. Once again, three and five-door bodies were offered, with the automaker’s newest range of gas and turbodiesel engines. The Super Select system was improved, with bevel gears used instead of planetary ones, and more sophisticated electronic controls.

The final era of the Pajero would start with 2006’s fourth generation, which enjoyed a superbly long run until 2021. Once again, three and five-door bodies were available, as were gas and turbodiesel engines. Some gas engines used direct injection for better performance. Exceed models came with rear air conditioning that used a separate compressor for truly independent cooling control. The rear suspension of this era was also modified for better occupant comfort. The fourth generation also received two facelifts. Sadly, Mitsubishi discontinued the Pajero by mid-2021. As of now, no successor has been officially announced.
