Mitsubishi GTO Overview
A technological marvel of the Nineties, the Mitsubishi GTO is what we know as the Mitsubishi 3000GT in North America, as well as the Dodge Stealth. For the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) the model was badged as GTO. You can see why such a name wouldn’t be possible in the United States, of course, lest General Motors raise a strong objection. No such issue in Japan, and the car was certainly fitting to wear the legendary letters of GTO. Mitsubishi offered the GTO with a 3.0-liter V6 under the hood. Lower priced variants were front- wheel drive and used a naturally aspirated version of the automaker’s 6G72 engine, still making 225 horsepower, and available with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearboxes. However, the aptly named Twin Turbo variant got, you guessed it, forced induction. For the JDM market it was good for an official 276 horsepower (Gentleman’s Agreement, remember) and 308 lb-ft of torque. This variant came with Mitsubishi’s trick all-wheel drive system that offered a 45% front and 55% rear torque split. Naturally, this more potent machine was only available in manual gearbox form. If you want supercar-scaring performance, this was the path to take back then. Of course, the GTO wasn’t a stripped-out racer. It came with a two plus two seating layout, and was equipped with some nice creature comforts. These included a powered driver seat with power-adjustable bolstering too, automatic climate control and a nice stereo. Higher variants boasted electronically controlled suspension and active aero, and even four-wheel steering, where the rear wheels could also steer in certain circumstances. In 1993, the GTO (and its North American brethren) were facelifted.
The engine was now able to give 315lb-ft of torque, although rated horsepower stayed at 276. On the inside, the audio system was updated and dual airbags were now standard. For the JDM market, Mitsubishi released a limited production variant called the GTO MR in late 1994. MR stands for Mitsubishi Racing, and MR models typically feature some performance enhancements and weight saving measures. For the MR, this comprised removal of several systems such as the four-wheel steering, active aero and a lighter all-wheel drive system installed. The car could also be specified with AP Racing 6-pot brakes. A second facelift was performed in 1997, which brought some minor exterior cosmetic changes. Production of the GTO, 3000GT and Stealth concluded in 2000, with no direct successor.
