The Toyota Century is an example of what Toyota can do when they want to make a luxury car like no other. Produced since 1967, the Century was officially sold by selected Toyota stores in Japan, as well as exported to a handful of countries. The United States wasn’t one of them, but examples have found their way here. So, if you want the last word in Japanese luxury, a Century is the way to go. The Century is known for its smooth engine that one can balance a filled champagne glass upon and observe it remain undisturbed while the engine runs. The Century also shuns standard leather in favor of wool upholstery, since wool does not produce any sound when sat upon, and remains temperature neutral. Leather is optional for the third generation.
The first generation came in 1967, and was based on the Toyota Crown. As befits a luxury car, only V8 engines were offered. Features such as air conditioning, electric door release, and a luxurious rear passenger cabin became quickly available. The latter features amenities such as electrically-adjustable seats, separate climate and radio controls. The first generation ran until 1997, with three iterations under it – the G20, G30 and G40.
The G50 came in 1997 and marked the arrival of the second generation. The headline of this was a new 5.0-liter V12 engine that offered unmatched smoothness, but could still make at least 280 horsepower. The rear cabin remains the focus, with electrically-reclining seats and a massage function. The front passenger seat also has a fold-down center section, enabling one rear passenger to fully stretch their legs.
The third generation of Century debuted in 2018. It added some notable tech features, including a 20-inch rear passenger entertainment screen and a 20-speaker sound system. The engine remains a 5.0-liter unit, but is now a V8, helped by a hybrid system. Toyota’s Safety Sense system is standard. Furthermore, Toyota introduced a Century SUV in 2023.
