The Nissan Cefiro is what we know as the Nissan Maxima in the United States. This stalwart of the midsize category is also one of the contemporary JDM classics of the Eighties and Nineties, in case you didn’t know. The Cefiro has also been sold under the Infiniti badge, as the I30 and I35. The first Cefiro came in 1988 as the A31 generation. It shared many aspects with the R32 Skyline, as well as some sister cars called the Nissan Laurel and Nissan Leopard. The first generation offered a range of smooth in-line gasoline sixes, ranging from 2.0 liters to 2.5 liters, some with turbochargers and providing up to 212 horsepower. It was also available with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Nissan’s trick HICAS four-wheel steering and Super Sonic Suspension packages were also available.
The second-generation Cefiro came in 1994 and was a vast departure from the first. Instead of being sporty, it switched to a front-wheel drive platform and became a comfort-oriented cruiser. Engines were now from Nissan’s VQ V6 family and ranged from 2.0 liters to 3.0 liters. Inside, buyers could avail themselves to simulated wood trim, automatic climate control and a 6-speaker sound system with CD changer.
The final hurrah was the third generation, which was made between 1998 and 2004. The VQ engine family remained, but the top option was now the 3.5-liter VQ35DE. The car remained front-wheel drive, though. Multi-link rear suspension was standard, with sportier trims getting a vehicle dynamic control system. Buyers could opt for simulated birdseye maple interior trim, a Bose sound system, an in-dash 6-CD changer, powered front seats, and even a navigation system in later model years. The trunk was larger than the previous generation, and split-folding rear seats were included too. Sadly, this marked the end of the Cefiro, although the J31 Teana which succeeded it was badged as Cefiro in some markets.
