The Honda Stepwgn (pronounced Stepwagon) is Honda’s minivan for the Japanese market. It’s not related to the Odyssey, which we get in the United States. Introduced in 1996, the first generation featured components from the Civic and came with a taller, narrower shape than the Odyssey. A sliding door for rear access was only installed on the passenger side. Honda would also offer a Stepwgn Almas for some generations. This variant featured a special seat lift to aid in carrying passengers with reduced mobility. A mild facelift was done in 1999.
The second generation came in 2001, and was positioned as a recreational family vehicle. The seats could rotate to face each other or lay down into a sleeping area. The second row could also be flat-folded for more cargo capacity. Despite being a minivan, it still packed a potent engine: the Honda K20 with around 160 horsepower. The 2003 facelift replaced this with a torquier K24.
The third generation dropped for 2005, and brought aerodynamic styling to the nameplate. For the first time, the Stepwgn now had sliding doors on both sides, plus a new low-floor chassis. A four-wheel drive model was now offered, and an update was performed in 2006. The fourth generation was introduced in 2009, and was a total redesign. The engine was now a 2.0-liter R20A unit. It was paired with a CVT gearbox and buyers could opt for four-wheel drive. A cosmetic facelift was done for the 2012 model year.
The fifth generation Stepwgn was introduced in 2015, with a downsized 1.5-liter turbo engine. Buyers could also opt for a hybrid powertrain. Its most defining feature is the Waku-Waku Gate, a special rear tailgate that can either open upwards or split into a smaller, side-opening gate. This generation was facelifted in 2017.
The sixth generation of 2022 is the current one. It reflects Honda’s current design language but loses the Waku-Waku Gate. It is available in turbo petrol or hybrid powertrain forms.
