The Honda Orthia is yet another one of those wonderful JDM-exclusive vehicles that you might never have heard of until now, and have since gotten a burning desire to own. Produced between 1996 and 2002, it was based on the sixth-generation Civic platform, but came with different styling. Honda positioned it as a “Sport Utility Wagon”. While the Orthia was a front-wheel drive vehicle given its Civic underpinnings, Honda also offered it with four-wheel drive, as you’d expect for something with the words Sport and Utility in the value proposition.
The Orthia also gave rise to a commercial van variant called the Partner, which was somewhat more stripped down. This continued to be made until 2006, but was only offered with D13, D15 or D16 engines that were 1.3-liter, 1.5-liter and 1.6-liter units, respectively. Meanwhile, the Orthia could be had with the more lively B18 (1.8-liter) and B20 (2.0-liter) powerplants that better suited its sporting character. The engine offering was trim-dependent, of course.
As time progressed, Orthia became increasingly luxurious and well-equipped. Some models offered satellite navigation, which was a premium feature at the time. Leather seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel could be had, as well as patterned interior panels. Most variants also got a power radio antenna and automatic climate control with air conditioning.
The Orthia was facelifted in 1999, with new headlamps, new bumpers and new seat upholstery designs. Now, the engine was the B20B 2.0-liter unit regardless of trim choice. The interior also saw a new double-DIN radio bezel, allowing fitment of newer double-DIN radios with ease. The L4 trim was the four-wheel drive one, and came with a two-tone paint job and wood interior trim panels. Meanwhile, the sporty S variant got carbon fiber-look interior accents and a special lip kit. It was available with front wheel drive or four-wheel drive.
