The Nissan 240SX is a well-known nameplate, because it was sold in the United States. It is part of Nissan’s Silvia line-up, and replaced the 200SX in 1991. This marked the first generation of the 240SX which is based on the S13 Silvia. Nissan offered it in hatchback and coupe body styles, and placed a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated engine under the hood. Meanwhile, Japanese market models got a turbocharged 1.8-liter unit instead (and were badged as 180SX or Silvia as a result).
Buyers could opt for an optional sports package to enhance the already sharp handling characteristics of the car. Only available on the hatchback, this package added anti-lock brakes and a limited-slip differential. That’s not all; buyers also got Nissan’s HICAS four-wheel steering system for easier maneuvering at low speeds and improved high-speed stability. Meanwhile, Japanese and Canadian market variants got the limited-slip differential as standard. They also featured an optional digital climate control system.
Nissan also sold a convertible variant in the United States. These were actually coupe models that were imported as such, and converted by American Specialty Cars. Meanwhile, the Japanese market did also have a convertible variant of the Silvia available.
The second generation of the 240SX came in 1994. It was based on the S14 generation of the Silvia. The car became longer and wider, and lost its pop-up headlamps. The engine remained the same 2.4-liter unit from the first generation but with enhancements made. These improved throttle response and reduced vibration. This variant was only offered as a coupe, and came with softer handling characteristics. Anti-lock brakes and a limited-slip differential were available, as was a CD player and anti-theft system. A minor facelift was performed for the 1996 model year, with projector headlamps being added.
So, if you want something a little different, why not pick a JDM 240SX or Silvia? It’ll likely have less mileage, be relatively stock, and come with some neat features.
