Japan’s take on the Personal Luxury Car / Grand Tourer segment, the Toyota Soarer is also known as the Lexus SC. You’re more likely to see the latter in the United States. The first generation Soarer was a two-door coupe, closely related to the Toyota Carina, Celica and Supra A60. Debuting in 1980, it came with a potent and smooth 2.0-liter straight six, manual or automatic gearboxes, and rear-wheel drive. A digital instrument cluster that used LEDs was present for higher trims, as was automatic climate control. All trims featured a self-diagnosis system with maintenance reminders, as well as an AM/FM/Tape player that could record on, as well as play cassette tapes. For the model’s mid-cycle refresh, 2.8-liter and 3.0-liter sixes were offered, as well as an Electro MultiVision display for the gauge cluster. This used a 6-inch CRT display within the cluster. An electronically-adjustable suspension system, called TEMS was also available.
The second generation was made from 1986 to 1991. A convertible variant was introduced here, as was a total change of styling. The range carried over many engines, but with increased power outputs, and TEMS was standard. Air suspension was offered for the top trim level.
The third generation was made between 1991 and 2000. Here, the Soarer would be totally restyled, adopting the new curvy design language of Nineties Toyotas. For the first time, buyers could select a smooth 4.0-liter V8, or the legendary 1JZ-GTE (2.5-liter turbo) and 2JZ-GE (3.0 liter naturally aspirated) in-line sixes. A Torsen torque-sensing differential was standard. Inside, the cabin was restyled as well, and a CD-based navigation system was available.
The fourth generation of the Soarer came in 2001, and was basically a rebadged Lexus SC. Only offered with a 4.3-liter V8 and automatic gearbox, this generation came with an electronically-folding roof as standard. It was discontinued in 2005, while the Lexus SC continued until 2010.
