Toyota Crown For Sale
The Toyota Crown is Toyota’s current longest-running passenger car nameplate. Introduced in 1955, it aimed to mobilize the masses, and was a relatively value-oriented four-door car, with rear-hinged coach doors for the rear passenger cabin. It was also available as a station wagon. However, the second generation of 1962 grew larger, as Toyota had introduced the Corona a short while prior. Hence, the Crown started getting luxurious. A 2-speed automatic gearbox and an in-line six-cylinder engine were offered.
The Crown’s third generation came in 1967, the fourth in 1971, and the fifth in 1974. Some notable features of these included the ability to open the trunk via the ignition key slot, a rear passenger radio control system, and fuel-injected engines. By the sixth generation of 1979, the Crown was well entrenched in the minds of the public as one of Toyota’s luxury cars. However, it was also produced in a lower trim for taxis since the Crown offered ample passenger and cargo capacity for the purpose.
1983’s seventh generation brought innovations such as Toyota’s TEMS adaptive suspension and ECT electronically controlled automatic transmission. Higher trims came with air conditioning and radio controls mounted within the rear passenger arm rest. A cassette player and CD player were available too.
The eighth generation came in 1987, and was the first time that a V8 would be offered. This was the smooth 4.0-liter unit from the Lexus LS400. In 1989, the Crown debuted the world’s first CD-ROM based automotive navigation system, using a color CRT display within the dashboard.
1991’s ninth generation would drop the V8 engine, as well as the manual transmission option for the Crown. 1995’s tenth generation raised the bar even further in terms of luxury, and the manual gearbox returned. It went away again for the eleventh generation, which saw the introduction of a mild hybrid powertrain. This was followed up by 2003’s twelfth generation, and 2009’s thirteenth generation. The latter brought a full hybrid system to the Crown, with 339 horsepower.
The fourteenth generation came in 2012, followed by the fifteenth in 2018 and the current sixteenth generation in 2022. Hybrid powertrains are largely prevalent, and the sixteenth generation also brings a crossover body style.
