Famously dubbed as unkillable, the Toyota Hilux started life in 1968 as a compact pickup truck. In 2005, it graduated to the midsize league. In the United States, the Hilux was succeeded by the Tacoma by 1995, but the Hilux continues to be sold in myriad other markets across the world.
The earliest Hilux was the first generation, a short wheelbase two-door, rear-wheel-drive truck. It quickly gained favor in Japan and overseas, and a long wheelbase variant joined the line-up shortly afterwards. It entered the US market in 1971, where it was produced at a factory in Long Beach, California. The second generation debuted in 1972, with the third following in 1978. This was when the Hilux would see its first diesel engine, a 2.2-liter naturally aspirated unit with 62 horsepower, as well as the four door double cab body style.
The fourth generation debuted in 1983 and saw the Hilux gain a turbocharged petrol engine for better performance. It also came with independent front suspension for the first time. The fifth generation was introduced in 1988, offering more space and some luxury features. This was enough to earn it Motor Trend’s 1988 Truck Of The Year award.
The sixth generation of 1997 was largely a facelift, but brought an updated range of engines to the Hilux. This generation is also notable for being the last of Japanese production. From 2004’s seventh generation, the Hilux would be built in Malaysia and Thailand for South and Southeast Asian markets. The seventh generation grew in size and became a mid-size truck. Payload capacity was improved due to increased strength in the ladder frame chassis, reportedly 45% stronger than the previous one.
The current eighth generation was introduced in 2015 and continues to this day. The eighth generation sees a completely redesigned cabin with more car-like aesthetics, as well as advanced safety features. It also comes with Toyota’s latest range of turbodiesel engines, as well as existing petrol powerplants, plus a six-speed automatic transmission on some trims.
