The Mitsubishi Delica may not be known in North America because it was sporadically sold under various names, such as Mitsubishi Van or Wagon. However, it is a legend in Japan and South East Asia. The Delica first appeared in 1968 and continues to this day. The first generation was made in cab-over style, and was offered as a van or pickup truck. It could carry over 1,300 pounds, and its little 1.1-liter engine could offer a top speed of 71mph depending on load and gradient.

The second generation was made in 1979, and gained boxier styling, plus the model’s iconic round headlamps. No less than ten variants were available, including passenger vans. A high-roofed Deluxe trim was available, replete with an electric sunroof. The second generation was also the first to introduce a diesel engine, the popular 4D56 unit. In 1986, the third generation took over. It received a full restyling with a more aerodynamic profile, and was sold in North America from 1987 to 1990. Available as a van or pickup truck, buyers could select from two wheelbase choices.

The fourth generation of 1994 marked a watershed moment. The Delica was no longer a cab-over vehicle. The third generation was concurrently produced to cater to commercial users. Hence, the fourth generation was more passenger-oriented, although it could be had as a commercial van without rear seats. It shared powertrains with the Mitsubishi Pajero at the time and was also available with a proper four-wheel drive system. In 1997, the fourth generation was facelifted for the first time, and a second facelift happened in 2002 for the Japanese market.

The fifth generation debuted in 2007. Now classed as a large MPV or minivan, it offered features such as power-sliding side doors and a power-operated rear tailgate. The interior was made more luxurious as well, with on-board navigation, and a rear entertainment system. This generation was facelifted for 2019.
