The Subaru Impreza is widely known for its spicy WRX and mental STI variants. But those aren’t the focus of this write-up. No, here we’re going to look at the Impreza model as a whole, which is, as the dependable, economical, and well-equipped compact car that it is. The first Impreza came about in 1992 as a four-door sedan or five-door station wagon. Its major selling point was the optional all-wheel drive system that Subaru employed for previous vehicles too. This made it useful for those living in snowy and/or mountainous areas. Subaru also went for its signature Boxer engine due to its lower center of gravity, improving handling and weight balance. So, the Impreza in its own was conceived as a driver’s car of sorts. A range of engines from 1.5 liters to 2.5 liters was available; of course, the larger ones came in the WRX and STI variants. The first generation was also offered as a stylish two-door coupe!
After eight years, Subaru released the second generation or “Bug Eye” Impreza in 2000. It offered a similar array of engines and body styles to the first, minus the coupe. Furthermore, the second generation underwent two facelifts. With the first facelift, its face changed to what’s known as the “Blob Eye”. The second facelift gave it a sharper face, called the “Hawkeye”. By 2007, the third generation was on the market and paved the way for diesel power for the first time. However, the wagon style disappeared, replaced by a sportier hatchback body style.
The fourth generation was introduced in 2011 and gained a taller profile overall. This was continued with the fifth generation of 2016, which introduced a New Global Platform by Subaru, which offered improved rigidity. However, diesel powertrains were discontinued for the Impreza. In 2023, the sixth-generation Impreza was showcased to the world, only as a hatchback, and for the first time, without a manual transmission.
