Utah JDM registration FAQ
Vehicles 25 years or older are exempt from federal NHTSA and EPA import standards, and Utah allows right-hand-drive imports. The state requires a safety inspection that scales with vehicle age — biennial for vehicles 4–8 years old, annual for 9+.
Bring your federal import paperwork (CBP Form 7501, EPA Form 3520-1, DOT Form HS-7), the Japanese export certificate with a notarized translation, your bill of sale, and proof of insurance meeting Utah's 25/65/15 minimums plus $3,000 PIP to your county DMV office. A VIN inspection by law enforcement or a DMV-authorized agent is required, and short Japanese chassis numbers are accepted. Title fee is $6, sales/use tax is 6.85% (varies by location), and older vehicles benefit from lower property tax and registration fees.
Utah has historically permitted kei trucks for road use, and Utah dealers actively sell road-titled kei mini trucks. As kei truck rules have shifted in some other states, confirm the current titling situation with the DMV or your dealer before purchasing.
Emissions testing is required in five Wasatch Front counties: Salt Lake, Davis, Utah, Weber, and Cache. Vehicles 1967 and older are exempt, and all 25+ year JDM imports also qualify for the age exemption. Counties outside the Wasatch Front generally do not require testing.
Yes — most Utah dealers ship nationwide and provide the bill of sale and federal import documents your home state's DMV will need. Utah's central western location makes transport reasonable in most directions.
