Massachusetts JDM registration FAQ
Vehicles 25 years or older are exempt from federal NHTSA and EPA import standards, and Massachusetts allows right-hand-drive imports. The state requires annual safety and emissions inspections, and headlight beam pattern may need adjustment for left-side traffic.
Massachusetts is one of the more involved states for JDM registration. Bring your federal import paperwork (CBP Form 7501, EPA Form 3520-1, DOT Form HS-7), the Japanese export certificate with a notarized translation, your bill of sale, and proof of insurance meeting Massachusetts's 20/40/5 minimums plus PIP to an RMV office. A VIN inspection at the RMV is required, an insurance-stamped RMV-1 form is required, and a safety/emissions sticker must be obtained within 7 days of registration.
Massachusetts has been one of the more cautious states on kei truck registration, and the mandatory annual safety inspection can be additional friction. Confirm the current titling status with the RMV or with a dealer who has registered kei trucks recently before purchasing.
Annual OBD-II emissions testing is required for vehicles 1996 and newer. Vehicles over 25 years old may be exempt from OBD-II but still need a visual inspection.
Yes — Massachusetts dealers ship throughout the Northeast and beyond, providing the bill of sale and federal import documents your home state's DMV will need.
