The Nissan GTR is a giant-killer, a supercar slayer, or any other form of David vs. Goliath analogy that you can think of. Initially, the GTR nameplate was reserved for high-performance variants of the Nissan Skyline. These variants were, and continue to be some of the most desired JDM cars in the world. So, Nissan decided to make the GTR a stand-alone model in 2007. Hence, The debut of the R35.
The R35 is still on sale, receiving numerous updates, as well as special editions. It uses a 3.8-liter VR38DETT twin-turbocharged V6, paired with a 6-speed Borg Warner dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and Nissan’s signature ATTESSA all-wheel drive system. When the GTR debuted in 2007, its power output was 473 horsepower; the 2024 model is rated for 562 horsepower. Special editions can deliver up to 710 horsepower, and aftermarket tuners can venture into four figures with mild to moderate modifications.
The GTR’s performance doesn’t just come from brutish power. Its aluminum and carbon fiber body is aerodynamically sculpted, and features plenty of functional aero bits to generate downforce. At 186mph, the GTR’s aero package generates 176 pounds of downforce at each end of the car. Launch control is standard, bringing 0-60 times of less than 4 seconds within reach of any amateur driver. Large, ventilated disc brakes and performance suspension all add up to a winning package.
Despite the performance-focused persona, the GTR is a four-seater with a suitably accommodating trunk (for a sports car). It has premium leather seats, automatic climate control, and an 11-speaker Bose sound system. The car also includes a customizable multifunction display in the center console. Inspired by a similar unit in the R34 Skyline GTR, the display can show various car-related parameters, such as performance data and powertrain parameters. This makes the GTR an ideal all-in-one package for the enthusiast driver with family commitments.
