Now here’s a fantastic choice for enthusiasts to learn the techniques of performance driving. The Nissan 180SX was produced between 1989 and 1998 and is essentially the sibling of the 240SX that was available in the United States. However, the 180SX variant is a Japanese market model and offered a choice of 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter powerplants. Oh, and turbos. Yes, these cars have turbos. More on that in a minute.
The 180SX’s wedge shape, fastback design and sexy pop-up headlamps are all good reasons to own and drive one. Its S13 chassis and rear-drive configuration add two more to the mix. Then, we get to the engines. Firstly, there were three generations of 180SX, although they weren’t really generations in the traditional sense, more like facelifts and enhancements. Cars made between 1989 and 1991 got a 1.8-liter turbocharged CA18DET engine that made a nice 173 horsepower. In 1991, a larger and more famous engine, the SR20DET was dropped in, with 202 horsepower. This engine would continue until the end of 180SX production. In 1996, a more economical variant came with the SR20DE (no turbo). This variant got just 140 horsepower, still a decent amount to have fun with.
The 180SX was available with 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions, depending on trim selection. First-generation variants also offered Nissan’s HICAS II four-wheel steering system as an option. This was upgraded to Super HICAS in 1991. Depending on trim selection, buyers got some cosmetic differentiations on the exterior. Inside, many variants offered automatic climate control with air conditioning and CD players.
The 180SX could do 0-60 in the low 6-second range when equipped with the SR20DET. Even early CA18DET cars could sneak in under 7 seconds when equipped with a manual transmission. This type of performance, coupled with the model’s multi-link rear suspension and predictable handling dynamics mean that these cars are popular for beginners who are learning to drift.
