If you want a JDM wagon that is genuinely unusual in the U.S. without being impractical to own, this Mark II Qualis is a seriously interesting option.
Finished in a deep wine-red metallic with factory roof rails and a clean, understated late-'90s Toyota design, this Qualis combines a roomy five-door wagon body with a smooth 2.5-liter V6, automatic transmission, and Toyota's reputation for building comfortable long-distance cars that can rack up mileage without drama.
The biggest selling point here is the mileage: the auction sheet shows only 46,586 km — 28,991 miles. For a 1999 Japanese-market wagon, that's exceptionally low usage.
Under the hood is Toyota's 2MZ-FE, a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter DOHC V6 rated by Toyota at 200 PS. This MCV21W version is front-wheel drive, paired with an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic. Toyota's own historical archive confirms that the MCV21W was the 2WD 2.5-liter Qualis, while the separate MCV25W chassis was used for the 4WD Qualis Four.
The Qualis is also an interesting piece of Toyota history. Despite wearing the legendary Mark II name, it did not use the rear-wheel-drive Mark II sedan platform. Toyota built it on the front-engine, front-wheel-drive Camry Gracia platform, then gave it unique front- and rear-end styling to visually tie it into the Mark II family. That means you get a spacious, comfortable wagon rather than a sedan-derived cargo compromise.

The cabin has exactly the kind of late-'90s Toyota simplicity that has aged well: straightforward controls, comfortable cloth seating, excellent visibility, and plenty of passenger and cargo room. Fold the rear seats and the Qualis becomes a genuinely useful wagon for road trips, parts hauling, shows, weekend gear, or simply daily use.
Visually, this one stands out without trying too hard. The dark wine-red paint, long roofline, chrome grille, roof rails, and full-width rear lighting give it a distinctly Japanese-market look that you simply don't see in normal U.S. traffic.
And unlike many JDM cars that sacrifice practicality for novelty, the Qualis was engineered as a comfortable family wagon from the start. Toyota listed the MCV21W with a 2,670 mm wheelbase and four-wheel MacPherson-strut suspension, giving it a much more conventional and road-friendly character than a lot of enthusiast imports.
At $11,500 as-landed, the combination of sub-30,000-mile equivalent mileage, V6 power, genuine JDM specification, wagon practicality, and rarity in the U.S. makes this one of those cars that can appeal both to Toyota collectors and someone who simply wants something different enough to start conversations everywhere it goes.
