Nissan’s Gloria is an executive-class car made by Prince, and later Nissan from 1959 to 2004. One of this Japanese automaker’s longest-running nameplates, the first Gloria came under the Prince brand in 1959. It was meant to be a more luxurious variant of the Prince Skyline – now there’s another well-known Nissan nameplate! It wouldn’t be long before the second generation came in 1962 and introduced a wagon variant too.
1967’s third generation marked the first time that Nissan would be seen on the Gloria, instead of Prince. The model had grown larger and now offered an automatic transmission. Then came the fourth generation of 1971, with quintessential ’70s coke-bottle styling and a hardtop coupe body style on offer. Buyers could also choose a diesel engine.
The fifth generation came in 1975 and included Nissan’s NAPS emissions control system. It also debuted a commercial van variant of the wagon. By 1979, the Gloria was totally redesigned, and the coupe was dropped. Buyers could get a punchy turbo in-line six for some performance, too. Then, 1983’s eighth generation brought the famous VG engine series that we know and love to this day. Some trims included Nissan’s Sonic Suspension, which used a bumper-mounted sonar unit to scan the road ahead and adjust the suspension accordingly. The driver could also adjust the firmness of the suspension.
The eighth generation came in 1987 and dropped the wagon and van variants. Its VG20T turbocharged engine variant now got double overhead camshafts. The Sonic Suspension was discontinued in favor of air suspension. Meanwhile, the 4-speed automatic transmission was now computer-controlled for better shift performance.
1991’s ninth generation received new styling with a characteristic quad circular headlamp front end. Frameless doors were introduced too, as were in vogue during the period. Buyers could even opt for the potent VG30T 3.0-liter turbo V6. Some of these features carried over to the tenth generation of 1995, which also introduced all-wheel drive. The VG30T now gained an intercooler. The last generation debuted in 1999. It was also available with turbocharged engines and came with new, sleeker styling.
