On sale for just five short years, the Honda Beat is one of the most desirable models from this well-known Japanese automaker. It’s a Kei sports car, with a mid-engined layout and rear-wheel drive. Designed by Pininfarina, the Beat remains an interesting curio, as well as a fine-handling sports car for those who don’t crave outright power over anything else. Highlighting its performance aspirations, the Beat is the first Kei car with all-round disc brakes.
The convertible Beat’s three-cylinder engine is a 656cc unit, since Kei car engines cannot exceed 660cc. However, Honda has endowed it with MTREC (Multi Throttle Responsive Engine Control). This means three throttle bodies, for a signature engine note, while producing 63 horsepower at a dizzy 8,100rpm. Torque peaked at 44lb-ft, once again at a high 7,000rpm. This highlights the peaky, revvy nature of the Beat’s E07A MTREC engine, which must be kept in a higher rev band for the driver to achieve maximum performance. However, the Beat is surprisingly tractable at town speeds. This is further aided by its standard 5-speed manual transmission. Unlike its spiritual successor, the Honda S660, Honda never offered the Beat with an automatic gearbox.
The Beat came with a generous level of standard equipment, given that it is an early nineties Kei car. All trims feature air conditioning, power windows, halogen headlamps, and a laminated front windshield. A driver airbag was an optional feature. The convertible soft top is a manually operated affair, but in typical Japanese fashion, is supremely easy to erect or fold down.
Honda electronically limited the Beat’s top speed to 84mph, but if derestricted, it can touch 90mph with just a driver of average weight. Furthermore, there are aftermarket tuning avenues for the Beat that will take it beyond the Kei car-mandated 64 horsepower limit, if you’re so inclined.
