The Toyota Supra is a car that many aspire to own and drive. It has been hung up on bedroom walls across the country, and the globe. Introduced in 1978 as a derivative of the Toyota Celica, the Supra has since gained a near-immortal reputation. The first generation Supra was less sporty and more luxurious but designed to go head-to-head with Nissan’s Z-cars. With smooth in-line sixes and manual or automatic transmissions, one could argue that the first-gen was of sorts, a grand tourer.
All this changed for the second generation of 1981. New, futuristic styling was introduced, with pop-up headlamps and a sportier personality. Luxury features remained, but a turbocharged engine was now available for more power. The Supra was now offered in the United States as well. When the third generation dropped in 1986, the Supra completely diverged from the Celica. It was now based on a different rear-wheel-drive platform, while the Celica went front-wheel-drive. The legendary 1JZ-GTE twin-turbocharged in-line six was available as was the R154 manual transmission that accompanied it.
The fourth generation of 1993 is the most popular Supra, thanks to its appearance in The Fast And The Furious. Styling was completely redesigned, and the car gained even more power thanks to the 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo six under the hood. The naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE was also available, as was an automatic transmission. Another notable feature of the fourth generation was its sky-high rear wing, which was about as high as the car’s roofline.
The fifth-generation Supra debuted in 2019 after a 17-year absence. It is based on the BMW Z4, and shares many BMW parts, including platform, interior, and engines. The major difference between the Z4 and the Supra is that the Z4 is a convertible and the Supra is a fixed-head coupe. Furthermore, the Supra has received tuning from Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division, and is officially marketed as the GR Supra.
