The Toyota Land Cruiser is Toyota’s longest-running nameplate. Introduced in 1951, there are three distinctive series. These are Heavy Duty, Light Duty and Station Wagon. The range started off with the heavy-duty BJ and FJ series, progressing through the J20, J30, and J40 by 1960. When the J70 or 70-Series debuted in 1984, it created a light-duty variant as well. Initially available only in short wheelbase, two-door form, the four-door light-duty 70-Series came in 1990. The light-duty series is also known as the Land Cruiser Prado, and it’s got enough history for a separate chapter.
Meanwhile, the Station Wagon series was progressing in tandem with the Heavy Duty series. The first of the Station Wagons was 1967’s J50 or 50-Series. This was followed by the 60-Series in 1980, and the 80-Series in 1990. Many of these variants were sold in the United States too. In 1981, sales of the Land Cruiser topped the 1 million mark; the 10-million mark was surpassed in 2019.
With the advent of the J80 or 80-Series, the Land Cruiser was becoming luxurious. The 80-Series formed the basis of the Lexus LX450. When the 100-Series or J100 came in 1998, it took the Land Cruiser/Lexus LX470 into a whole new level of luxury. Buyers could have a 4.7-liter V8 or a 4.5-liter turbodiesel under the hood. A 5-speed automatic gearbox replaced the old 4-speed unit. Toyota’s TEMS adjustable suspension was introduced. Furthermore, Toyota introduced the world’s first automotive night vision system in 2002, on the J100 Land Cruiser Cygnus, and the Lexus LX470.
The J200 or 200-Series came in 2007 and ran until 2021. Also called the Lexus LX, it offered new 4.6-liter or 5.7-liter V8 engines, or a 4.5-liter turbodiesel V8. The 200-Series would see two facelifts and come with even more luxury features. The current generation is the J300 or 300-Series, introduced in 2021.
