Formed through the crucible of the mid-size SUV market during the golden era of Japan, the Toyota Hilux Surf quickly became a model synonymous with reliability in the 90’s and it’s legacy continues to this day. Tough and rugged, the Surf is suited perfectly for those looking for a well rounded SUV that can go nearly anywhere. Parts are readily available through various suppliers all around the globe, and its status in the overlanding community has been well earned.

At the heart of this Surf lies the well built and sturdy 1KZ-TE. Found in multiple generations of the Hiace, Granvia, Prados, and of course, the Hilux, it’s dependability is perfectly suited for the everyday driver. Maintenance is easy and Toyota still offers service items such as filters and gaskets through various dealerships in the US, making sourcing parts and servicing a breeze. We’ve serviced this example for its next owner by replacing all filters, fluids and performed a timing belt job for a care-free drive.

Refinished in the modern “Ice Cap white” that can still be found on Toyotas to this day, the bright white paint gives a high gloss finish that highlights the classic TRD colorway found on the newly installed decals. Keeping with the retro 90’s look, we’ve installed aftermarket wheels that are finished in a sunburst bronze to compliment the body even further and are wrapped in new Thunderer Ranger A/T tires, helping to give a slight lift and provide even more ground clearance to this rugged chassis.

Sitting inside, this Hilux Surf has been equipped with rarities all over. OEM multi-color patterned floor mats sit below for all occupants, and often advertised for bringing the pets along for the ride, Toyota optioned cargo nets sit behind the rear seats. Sitting inside, seats and upholstery are simple but rugged, and offered power windows, mirrors, and locks. Sending power from the 1KZ-TE, a five speed manual sits in the middle and gives full availability to the driver on how to send power to the wheels via its selectable 4WD system.

It’s no secret that the KZN185 and other 3rd generation Hilux Surfs are a favorite of ours here at JDM Sport Classics.
