The third generation Hilux Surf is a rugged and durable SUV designed and manufactured by Toyota. This model in specific was produced from 1996 to 2002, and is known for its exceptional off road capabilities and reliability.

The exterior of the KZN185 Hilux features an updated look from its predecessor, featuring a full body redesign that gives it more appealing look. Its updates are more extensive than just aesthetics, the body is built with high strength steel and features a reinforced frame for a much safer ride. Additionally, coil sprung suspension was added all the way around the vehicle to give a much smoother driving experience. Other updates included a larger body on a longer wheelbase, increased interior space, increased cargo space, dual airbags, ABS, lift up tailgate, rack and pinion steering, and aerodynamic contour designed glass headlights.

Under the hood, the KZN185 Hilux is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine, which produces 145 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 4 speed automatic transmission with electronically selectable 4WD. This example also has selectable high and low transfer case modes located on the T-Case lever to the left of the transmission shifter.

Inside the cabin, the Hilux Surf is designed for comfort and convenience, with features such as cold air conditioning, power windows and mirrors, and foldable rear seats for more cargo storage. The seats are spacious and supportive, and the dashboard is easy to read and navigate. Similar to the USDM 4Runners, the Toyota Hilux also features the power rear window that can be rolled down with the switch near the steering wheel, or with the key.
